Greetsiel – shrimp cutters and twin windmills

The fishing village of Greetsiel in the Krummhörn region is about 25 minutes away by car and the first stop for many guests. Traditional shrimp cutters moor in the harbour, while the old town is lined with brick houses, small shops and tea rooms. The village’s landmarks are the twin windmills on its outskirts.

Pilsum Lighthouse – the yellow-and-red classic

Just a few kilometres further on, Pilsum Lighthouse stands on the dyke. The little yellow-and-red tower became famous through comedian Otto Waalkes and is now one of the most photographed sights in East Frisia. The path there leads along the dyke – ideal for a walk with views over the Wadden Sea.

Norddeich – North Sea, beach and Wadden Sea

Norddeich is about a 30-minute drive away. This is where the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea begins: beach, dyke promenade and mudflat walks at low tide. Ferries to the islands of Juist and Norderney depart from Norddeich Mole, so a day trip to the islands is easy. The seal sanctuary is also worth a visit.

Emden – culture and harbour

Emden, around 15 minutes by car, is the nearest town. The Kunsthalle Emden art gallery, the East Frisian State Museum and the harbour are all worth seeing. If you are travelling with children, you will also find shops and bad-weather alternatives here.

Out and about with your dog

Dogs are welcome at no extra charge – and East Frisia is great territory for them. Quiet farm tracks lead through the marshland around Canhusen. On the North Sea coast, Norddeich has designated dog beaches. Please note that dogs must be kept on a lead in the Wadden Sea National Park and on grazed dykes, and many areas are fenced.

Cycling through the marshland

East Frisia is flat – perfect for cycling. A regional bike rental service delivers bikes straight to the apartment, from e-bikes to child or dog trailers. From Canhusen you can reach both the Krummhörn and Emden via the East Frisian node network without any notable climbs.

On rainy days

Not every day on the coast is a beach day. The Kunsthalle and State Museum in Emden, the Otto Huus, the tea rooms in Greetsiel or an afternoon in the apartment with smart TV and streaming will cover the rainy days.
